When I saw the lionfish for the first time in Asia, I was thrilled with its many spines, which seem like feathers to me. It is a breathtaking beauty. Capturing it photographically is not that easy! When photographed towards the reef, it literally merges with the background.
Photographing him in front of the open blue water is one way to photograph him nicely - but despite many attempts, I have never succeeded because he usually swims very close to the reef and he doesn't particularly like it when I move my arms in wide swimming movements try to maneuver between him and the reef!

But in this particular situation, I spotted a lionfish floating in front of a large deep cave. I immediately recognized the opportunity. I knew that my two flashes would illuminate him nicely, but the light would not be able to reach the distant background, so that the backdrop would be almost black.
